Testing Information

Student Assessment Information:

This page contains testing information for grades K - 12.  If you have any questions about district testing, please contact Mrs. Amy Olivieri, District Testing Coordinator, at 330-706-2730.

Federal and state laws require all districts and schools to test all students in specific grades and courses. There is no law that allows a parent or student to opt out of state testing, and there is no state test opt-out procedure or form. If a parent withdraws a student from participation in state tests, there may be consequences for the student,  the student's teacher, and the school and district.  State tests are critical for measuring student learning and ensuring that every Ohio student receives a high-quality education. The results from state tests are how we are held accountable.

Current state law requires achievement assessments in English language arts and math for each of grades three through eight and science in grades five and eight. Further, state law requires high school end-of-course exams, starting with the class of 2023, in English language arts II, Algebra I, Biology, American History, and American Government. High school students must also take a nationally standardized assessment, the ACT. For more information on Ohio's State Assessments, click here.

Possible Consequences for Students When They Do Not Take State Tests:
1. Third Grade Reading Guarantee: A student who does not take the state's grade 3 English language arts test will not have a score on that test and may not be promoted to the fourth grade as part of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee, unless an exemption applies. For more information on exemptions, visit the Ohio Department of Education.
2. English Learners: A student who does not take the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment cannot exit the English as a Second Language Program.
3. High School Graduation Requirements: Students must take all end of course exams and achieve a score of competent on English Language Arts II and Algebra I. More information on graduation requirements can be found on the Ohio Department of Education's website.

More about the Ohio assessment program can be found here:

In addition, students in first through seventh grades take a diagnostic assessment three times per year in reading and mathematics. This test is the MAP (Measure of Academic Progress). More information about the MAP assessment can be found here: https://www.nwea.org/map-growth/

At the second and fourth grade, the district gives the InView tests for determining whether students are eligible for gifted identification and services as superior cognitive.  The state sets strict criteria as to what scores produce gifted designations.
More on gifted education can be found on the ODE website:

Additionally, high school students can participate in the ASVAB, PSAT, SAT and ACT.
